Careers Coordinator 

A list of events arranged by the Chair, Patricia, this year to provide an example of the types of events the careers coordinator will be expected to arrange upon their election.

Tours 

• Royal Courts of Justice, Supreme Court, Inner Temple, Gray’s inn alongside a complimentary lunch ​

Insight events 

• Shakespeare Martineau, University of Law – Multiple online sessions for the ‘Legal Talk Series

Guest Speakers 

• Emma Greening, employment law barrister with 3PB, Laurie-Elizabeth Ketley, family law barrister with 3PB, Nazir Afzal OBE, former head of prosecutions for the CPS (arranged by the Mistress of Moots, Qadira)

Affiliation with OUSA 

• Promoting all upcoming events to the wider OU community, Attending Welcome Week at the OU campus in Milton Keynes, Holding welcome week sessions online to promote the OULS to new members

Other competitions

• Essay competition created by the Treasurer, Mark

It is hoped the careers coordinator will arrange even more events as this will be their core responsibility.

 

Editor 

A list of current editorial responsibilities held by the committee is listed below.  

 

Social media 

• Facebook (managed by the Chair, Trisha), Instagram (managed by the Secretary, Will),  LinkedIn (shared management between the Chair and a previous vice chair, Isabelle Hoyet), YouTube, not currently updated 

Other platforms 

• OU forums (managed by the Chair with assistance from Isabelle Hoyet)

Website 

• Currently managed by the Chair however, once the new website is published, the editor will be responsible for updating this instead 

Newsletter 

• Advertisement of external events and programmes 

• Notifications of deadlines including scholarship applications

This is currently drafted and circulated by the Chair however, the editor will work alongside the secretary to update the newsletter instead.

Master/Mistress of Moots x 2 

The current Mistress of Moots, Qadira, was not elected and appointed to their role until late November 2024 therefore, some of the events were organised by the Chair however in future both mooting coordinators will be responsible for facilitating such events. Events this year include:

Workshops

• An advocacy workshop and 2 introductory mooting workshops held by the Chair (with one assisted by Isabelle Hoyet),

Mooting competitions

• Internal Novice Mooting Competition (1st round held at the National Justice Museum arranged by the Chair) with the subsequent rounds held online with the competitions judged and moot problems created by the Mistress of Moots, Qadira. Gary Slapper Memorial Mooting Competition (final held at the Supreme Court arranged by the Chair) with the other rounds judged and problems created by the Mistress of Moots, Qadira. 

Advocacy competitions 

• 2 competitions held online, with the problems created by the Chair, Patricia, with the mistress of moots assisting in judging the 2nd one.  

External mooting competitions 

• Teams selected to compete at 3 external competitions, promotion of Speed Mooting competitions

It is hoped the Master/Mistress of Moots will arrange more 3rd party judges for these competitions in the future.
